Power and cables: the vital lifelines of your telescope
Anyone delving into modern astronomy or astrophotography quickly discovers that a telescope is more than just glass and metal. Once you work with a GoTo mount, a cooled camera, dew ribbons or a focusing motor, your setup becomes a complex electronic ecosystem. The category power and cables is the foundation of this ecosystem. Without a reliable power source and high-quality cabling, your observation or photo session will stop before it has even begun properly.
At telescoop.nl, we know that night conditions, humidity, freezing temperatures and constant movement demand the utmost from electronics. That's why we offer only power and cable solutions to those that have been specifically tested for their performance under the stars.
Why standard cables often fail in the cold
Many beginners make the mistake of using standard USB cables or power cables from consumer electronics. In winter, however, you quickly discover the problem: The insulation of ordinary cables becomes hard and stiff at low temperatures. Then, when the telescope moves to track an object, these stiff cables can pull out of the ports or even break internally.
Our special cables are often equipped with silicone insulation or extra flexible sheaths. These remain flexible well below freezing. This is essential for ‘cable management’ where cables are routed along the mount. A flexible cable prevents ‘cable snag’, which is one of the main causes of damaged USB ports on expensive astro-cameras.
Power in the field: the power of the powerbank
For the astronomer escaping the city in search of a dark spot, a reliable mobile power supply is crucial. An average astrophotography setup with mount, camera and laptop quickly consumes 3 to 5 amps per hour.
Lithium-Polymer (LiPo) Powerbanks: These are compact, lightweight and retain their voltage better than the old lead-acid batteries. Our dedicated astro-powerbanks often feature 12V DC outputs (for the mount) and USB-PD ports for modern smart-telescopes or laptops.
Capacity and temperature: Keep in mind that a battery's capacity decreases in the cold. We always recommend including an excess capacity of at least 30% when choosing your power supply.
Mains adapters: stability in the backyard
If you are observing from your own garden, an AC adapter is often the most practical choice. However, a telescope mount places high demands on voltage stability. A cheap adapter can produce voltage spikes that can damage the sensitive electronics of your GoTo system.
Our power adapters provide a stable 12V (or 13.8V for extra ‘punch’ on heavy mounts) and are short-circuit and overload protected. In addition, they are often equipped with a screw terminal for the power plug so that the cable does not accidentally disconnect during a ‘meridian flip.’.
Data transfer: USB 3.0 and active extension cables
In modern CMOS astro-cameras, huge amounts of data are transmitted per second. A poor quality USB cable leads to dropped frames or connection errors in software such as N.I.N.A. or ASIair.
Within our category power and cables find USB 3.0 cables with extra shielding against electromagnetic interference (EMI). Do you have a long distance to cover from your telescope to your laptop in a hot car? Then use an active USB extension cable with signal amplifier to prevent data loss over long distances.
Frequently asked questions about power and cables
Can I use a universal 12V adapter for my mount? Only if it supplies exactly the right polarity (usually ‘center positive’) and enough amps. A mount that receives too little current will track inaccurately or even reboot spontaneously. We always recommend using an adapter specifically approved for astronomy.
How do I prevent cables from getting tangled while running? We call this cable management. Use Velcro strips (not tie-wraps, as they are too permanent) to bundle cables. Route them through the axes of the mount to a central point. A good cable set from our power and cables category helps with this by offering the right lengths.
My battery is draining faster than expected, how is that possible? Dew ribbons are the biggest power consumers. A dew ribbon at full power can drain a small power bank within a few hours. Use a dew controller to regulate the power to double your battery life.
