Astrophotography is a challenging but rewarding field, capturing the beauty of the night sky. Dennis Huitema, an experienced and talented photographer, took some spectacular photos of the Milky Way in Tenerife. In this interview, Dennis shares his tips and techniques on how he took and post-processed these stunning astrophotography shots.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The art of astrophotography: How Dennis Huitema captures the Milky Way<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Astrophotography requires more than just a camera and a clear night. It is an art in which technique and creativity come together. Dennis explains: \u201cSuch shots involve hefty edits. Although you can see a lot with the naked eye, the colors and details only really come to life during post-processing.\u201d Capturing the Milky Way is challenging because many details only become visible through techniques such as proper lighting and post-processing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Stacked photos: An essential technique in astrophotography<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

During the interview, Dennis talks about the technique behind his impressive photographs, which involve long exposure times. \u201cThis shot was created by a series of 43 stacked photos, each with an exposure time of 15 seconds,\u201d he explains. \u201cBecause of those long exposures, you get all those details coming out so beautifully.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Separating foreground and background in astrophotography<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

To achieve the best possible quality, Dennis photographs the foreground and starry skies separately. \u201cI shot the foregrounds separately to be able to edit both the foreground and sky at their best,\u201d he explains. Because of this approach in his astrophotography, he is able to post-process each photo to perfection and achieve an impressive end result.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Long exposure times: A key to success in astrophotography<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Besides stacking photos, Dennis also uses long exposure times in his astrophotography. The image above taken with a 50mm lens, consists of two stacked photos with an exposure of 120 seconds each. \u201cI first edit them separately and then merge them for a joint finishing touch,\u201d he says. These long exposure times keep the stars in focus and the Milky Way visible in its full glory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dennis adds that this is possible thanks to the use of a startracker, a device he aligns with the North Star. \u201cThe startracker makes my camera go against the rotation of the earth, so my pictures stay sharp and don't blur because of the movement of the stars.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
