For centuries, what lies above has led to myths, scientific discoveries and missions into the unknown. But how well do we know our <strong>own solar system<\/strong> actually? From the red-hot surface of Venus to the icy edges of the Oort Cloud, this is the story of our place in the universe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What is the solar system?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Our solar system is a <strong>complex and dynamic whole<\/strong> consisting of:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>The Sun<\/strong>, the center of our planetary system.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Eight planets<\/strong>, from rocky worlds to colossal gas giants.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Five officially recognized dwarf planets<\/strong> such as Pluto and Eris.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Hundreds of moons<\/strong> circling planets and even asteroids.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Tens of thousands of asteroids and comets<\/strong> in the Kuiper belt and Oort cloud.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The solar system is in a <strong>side arm of the Milky Way<\/strong>, known as the <strong>Orion Arm<\/strong>, and moves through the galaxy at a dizzying speed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-8d39b2df wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignfull size-full\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"295\" height=\"289\" src=\"https:\/\/staging.telescoop.nl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/orions-arm.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-12973\" title=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/staging.telescoop.nl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/orions-arm.png 295w, https:\/\/staging.telescoop.nl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/orions-arm-150x147.png 150w, https:\/\/staging.telescoop.nl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/orions-arm-64x63.png 64w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 295px) 100vw, 295px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A solar system in motion<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although everything in our solar system revolves around the sun, our entire planetary system moves <strong>at a speed of 829,000 mph<\/strong> around the center of the Milky Way. One full orbit takes about <strong>230 million years<\/strong>. The last time our solar system completed this journey, dinosaurs were still roaming the Earth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But how far does our solar system extend? The planets are just the beginning. Far beyond the orbit of Neptune lies the <strong>Kuiper belt<\/strong>, a ring of icy objects. Even further is located the <strong>Ear Cloud<\/strong>, a giant spherical collection of frozen debris. But it doesn't. That title goes to <strong>Venus<\/strong>, where temperatures reach <strong>475\u00b0C<\/strong>. How can that be?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Venus has a <strong>thick atmosphere full of carbon dioxide and sulfuric acid clouds<\/strong>. This creates an extreme greenhouse effect where heat is trapped. Imagine that you <strong>1,000 earths<\/strong> could compress - you still wouldn't reach the full size of Jupiter. But did you know that <strong>all gas giants have rings<\/strong>? The rings of Uranus and Neptune are much more subtle and less visible, but they are there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition to rings, our solar system counts <strong>hundreds of moons<\/strong>. Jupiter and Saturn each have dozens of moons, and even asteroids sometimes have small moons in their orbits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Space exploration: Our journey beyond the planets<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since the 1970s, we have not only studied but actively explored the solar system. <strong>More than 300 robotic missions<\/strong> have been launched to investigate planets, comets and even interstellar space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Two of the most legendary missions are <strong>Voyager 1 and 2<\/strong>. These space probes, launched in 1977, are the first human objects to leave our solar system. They are still sending back data and won't return until about <strong>thousands of years<\/strong> leaving the Oort cloud.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Other missions such as <strong>Pioneer 10, Pioneer 11 and New Horizons<\/strong> will eventually reach interstellar space as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Life in our solar system?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As far as we know, is <strong>the earth the only place where life occurs<\/strong>. But NASA and other space agencies are actively looking for signs of life elsewhere. <strong>Mars<\/strong>, with its dry riverbeds, and the icy oceans beneath the surface of <strong>Europa (moon of Jupiter) and Enceladus (moon of Saturn)<\/strong>, are promising candidates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The question remains: <strong>Are we alone?<\/strong> Although we do not yet have a definitive answer, we are at a time when we may finally be able to answer this age-old question. We have already learned an incredible amount, but there is still much to discover.
